Bruised and Battered but Berlin’s da Bomb!

I’m now on my way back to Copenhagen after an amazing weekend in Berlin, where I celebrated Ibadan Records’ label party, at what they call Europe’s hottest club..drum roll please… Panorama Bar/Berghain! It’s been more than ten years since I last visited this European gem, though this time the Berliner Philharmonics tickets were swapped out for a decadent night at the notorious concrete castle. For less than a good dinner in Copenhagen, I got a return ticket online for €52 with Easy Jet , and 45 minutes after take off we were in Schönefeld Airport. I do love the ease and luxury of a cab or limo, but equally enjoy experiencing the authenticity of a new location and its people, by riding the public transportation. For €2,80 I got an all zone ticket (valid 90 mins) and hopped on a train towards Mitte (Center). People seemed similar to the Danes in that everyone seemed calm and collected with no crazy outbursts from freaks such as th average NY’er experience quite often, but then again, it’s so cold up here in the North people are defecating ice cubes! 20 minutes later I was at Alexander Platz, where I spotted some street sellers offering me vintage military hats. Like an old veteran I decorated myself, looking especially hot (so I think!) in my new red beret, which would make Che salut eme with pride. Two stops later on the subway, I was warmly welcomed at Jerome’s and Christine’s, where an International group of folks (DJs, artists and promoters) had assembled for what would be an awesome and scandalous night! We were off for dinner at Schneeweiß (Snowwhite) which quite according to its name was all decorated beautifully in white, and had matching nice staff taking care of us. By now I was already much more interested in the local white wine, over the dead rabbit on my plate, which tasted quite similar to chicken. In exchange for a modest €40 we made some good toasts, had a good bite in a great atmosphere. Now off we were to the party. As we approached the famous club, the look of the trashed post war concrete building, meets low budget Deutsch porn flick, already had my adrenalin going. We knew this would be a sick night! It was guarded and operated by what seemed to be hardcore leather gay men bouncers, straight out of a Falcon movie, who in a very German and orderly fashion ushered us through the gates. Past the entrance and we found ourselves in the majestic concrete castle, perfectly fitted with a long ass bar, and a main room big enough for a couple of thousand people. The speakers were already thumpin from a track by Calabria’s Father Rune RK who later on tore up the the house with his brother Johannes Torpe. Upstairs was the famous Panorama Bar, in which Japanese DJ Katsuya Sano was throwing sex beats after us, and as the night progressed and vodka turned into a sea of bliss, it seemed that everybody from fashionistas to the German Chelsea boys were all one celebrating…music…yeah, life. The good stench of locker room, sweaty bodies, pharmaceutic enhancers was a perfect fit for this house/tech heaven! Upstairs was a small room, where I took a needed time out. Here they served coffee tea; what a perfect contrast to the pharmacy downstairs. I went a few more hours on drinks alone, before I threw in the towel at 8am, escorted out to Dennis Ferrer’s set, whom with Jerome tore it up! Mission accomplished, and I left the venue bruised, battered, with a bass line bangin my head, thinking Berlin’s da bomb!

Bliss,

A
